Carolinas Wind Orchestra was founded over twenty years ago, as a community band and part of the Winthrop University music curriculum for advanced wind and percussion majors. At least eight CWO musicians are Winthrop University music students selected by Dr. Lorrie Crochet each semester. CWO rehearses at Winthrop University Byrnes Auditorium and is approximately 90 musicians strong. CWO musicians from the community are adults from eight North Carolina and South Carolina counties.
CWO is a true community band, all instrumentalists are volunteers. Members are selected by audition with over 75% holding bachelor or higher music degrees. Approximately half of our members work in or are retired from music education. Other’s occupations range from accountants to an airline pilot. CWO is a not-for-profit corporation with the formal objective of “perpetuating the community concert band as part of the tradition of American music, through public performance of concert band literature played by musicians of advanced proficiency.”
